Betaseron gets modified labelling

Doctor's Guide has a press release from Berlex announcing FDA approval for labelling changes to Betaseron. This reflects their recent studies in people with secondary progressive MS. It looks like they are also now able to make claims equivalent to the other IFN drugs regarding reduction of relapses. Betaseron was the first to market, so didn't get to make all the claims the others did once there was more data. Interesting how reference is made to updates in the safety labelling, but those aren't detailed in the press release. Also interesting is how depression in Avonex requires label changes, but not retesting of the other IFN drugs (heavily advertised by each vendor to be "basically the same").

I've been stable on Betaseron for the past ten years. I am unsure of my MS label but guess it might be secondary progressive. Before Betaseron I was experiencing frequent disabling attacks. I haven't had a new attack in years.

I have a friend who had a long history of relapses. When Betaseron came on the market she started taking it and has basically been relapse free. The disease has progressed, but the debilitating relapses have stopped. Obviously these drugs help certain people, but far more people are put on them than are being helped by them. It would be great if there were a way to discern who would respond and who wouldn't.
