Biogen Idec Testing Regenerative Medicine Drug to Reverse the Path of MS

Biogen Idec is working on the first experimental drug that may reverse the symptoms of the neurodegenerative disease.

The drug, being tested in animals and prepped for its first human trial, is designed to block a protein called Lingo-1 that interferes with body’s production of myelin, the fatty protective coating around nerve fibers.

No name or code name given in the article, but we'll be watching the progress of this one.

does anyone know whatever happened to symnadex? i thought it was another drug that was supposed to reverse symptoms. just wondering.

The latest I heard about it:

Reversing MS symptoms, huh? I think that might be monumentally difficult since no one knows what causes MS in the first place--the etiology of MS (viral, environmental, misfolded proteins in the DNA, etc).

But, all the luck to them (I'll keep my fingers crossed).

I think it might be the key to reversing the disease. its a matter of what comes first, the chicken or the egg. Even if its just one symptom at a time, I would love to be going in a more positive direction than the copaxone holding pattern I am in. Have a good day and keep on this kind of news. Pat

I don't know if you have heard about this study in Geneve Switzerland: http://www.tsr.ch/tsr/index.html?siteSect=500000&channel=info#program=15;vid=9654363

The videoclip is in French and I dont understand it either but I read in our Swedish local MS society page that the scientists have successfully transplanted the disease (human version) and the human's immune system into a mouse. They also found a molecule/antibody that repair the myelin in two weeks. The human trials will be started in the early 2009 and they hope that the medicine will be available in 2010 or later. Sounds amazing and promising. Lets hope the best!

They made the discovery here:

This would be the holy grail. 8 years to get to phase I, which is still being designed. It works in mice. Then again, we just saw Tovaxin fail, but fortunately, this is Biogen, not Opexa.
