NIH spending by disease

The NIH's web site has this interesting chart breaking down their spending by disease. Don't do too many comparisons with Multiple Sclerosis or you might need some of the "high blood pressure" dollars. Obesity gets more than 3 times as much funding, for example.

One could argue endlessly about the relative merits of the various categories of research, but it seems to me that we really don't need any more dollars spent telling us that smoking is bad. Certainly not $550M, or about 10x what is spent on diseases and conditions (like MS, Autism) that people don't actually cause themselves.

I used to work for a government contractor that was designed to help health related problems both in the US and in poorer countries. It seemed most of the 'projects' dealt with smoking, Aids, or birth control. I guess the gov. likes to teach people about things they deem controllable. Yet, were is the money to find controls for more mysterious diseases. Hmmmm. I guess that is left to organizations like Boston Cure.
Autoimmune Disease: 608.6 million. Perhaps because MS is lumped into this category the money is not as generous in the specific MS category. What was even more interesting (and sad) was that my sister's Fibromyalgia gets very little money in the scheme of things. That is probably because FM is another "women's" disease and aren't they supposed to be psychosomatic?
