Feds largely unaware of ADA options in gov't jobs

Cornell researchers have a report on a study they did entitled 'Survey of the Federal Government on Supervisor Practices in Employment of People with Disabilities.' This report concludes that 10 years after the ADA was passed there has been much progress in adapting the workplace for the disabled in the Federal Government, but there exists a majority of supervisors who are unaware of the options they have to adapt their workplace appropriately.

Another point which the article did not make is: Some supervisors don't want to know the laws because disabled people make them uncomfortable. It is sad to say but many people are afraid of those who are different than they are. It is easier for a supervisor to admit that they are unaware of every employment law than to admit that they don't know how to interact well with others who have special needs. Of course, the clear way to get around this difficulty is to mesh the worlds. The more someone (or a group) is around, the more used to them you get, the more able you are to treat them like a person rather than a disease... but, alas... that is what the laws are for, and sometimes you just have to MAKE people aware of the law.
