Super Cyclophosphamide vs. Mighty Mitoxantrone

I love a good competition, especially between different drugs. Here's a study that compared efficacy between two chemo treatments used in aggressive MS: cyclophosphamide (CTX) and mitoxantrone (MITO).

After a mean follow-up of 3.6 years there was no significant difference in terms of time to the first relapse, whereas time to disease progression was slightly shorter in MITO than in CTX group. After 12 months of treatment, active MRI scans were reduced by 69% in MITO and 63% in CTX patients. Discontinuation due to side effects was more frequent in CTX patients. However, the overall tolerability profile was acceptable in both groups.

So don't sweat the choice if you have to make it - you're in good hands with either.

One of the downsides with mitoxantrone is potential heart problems which limits the number of times you can have it. Pixantrone appears to be similar to mitoxantrone but without the heart risk it is just about to start trials in MS patients.
