Interplay between inflammation and suppression in MS white matter

Here's another interesting finding from the field of MS brain tissue analysis: A comparison of gene expression in normal-appearing white matter in MS brains vs. control white matter found that both pro- and anti-inflammatory factors were upregulated in the MS brains. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory factors appeared to be produced by oligodendrocytes, while pro-inflammatory factors were expressed by microglia. The interplay between these two cell types may determine the degree of inflammation present in the MS brain and may also influence the development of lesions.
