Segway feasible as mobility device
Hundreds of people with walking-related disabilities have adopted the Segway personal transporter to help in getting around. A research team in Vancouver interested in exploring the use of Segways for this purpose conducted a study at a rehabilitation center to see how easy or difficult it would be for people with different disabilities to use this device.
Test subjects included 23 patients with different medical conditions (MS, spinal cord injury, amputation, and others) who could walk at least 6 meters. Subjects were given three training sessions and evaluated on how well they could operate the Segway. The research team wanted to see what effect different functional limitations had on Segway skills, but found that all of the subjects were able to master using the device regardless of cognition, balance, mobility, or muscle strength. So if you are considering using a Segway but are unsure whether you could successfully use it, perhaps it's worth giving it a try.
