Biogen's 2nd Quarter Profits Fall 40%

40% drop? Ouch! In this article Biogen blames things like "slower-than-anticipated growth in the overall multiple sclerosis market", "reductions in wholesaler inventories and "the US approval of rival Serono SA's Rebif." They are planning to increase spending to protect their leadership position in MS treatment.

it's obscene that they have spent so much on litigation and "questionable" studies rather than pushing for approval of a flexible or at least an increased dosing regimen.

had avonex offered to package the same regimen used for rebif i doubt the fda would have let their market be carved up. that the orphan drug system remain credible is in everyone's best interest.

there's no excuse for both greed and short sightedness.

dose flexability would have helped them by cutting rebif off at the knees, and helped patients by making a dose dependant drug available in an appropriate manner.
Biogen is first and foremost a marketer. They positioned themselves from the beginning as the most covenient product, requiring just one injection per week. Flexible dosing would jepordize that. (From their standpoint.)
