14,000 People on Tysabri After One Year

Biogen Idec has reminded us that Tysabri has been back on the market for a year now. They indicate that over 14,000 people are on it at this point. Personally, I think the 2 year point will be the important one, as it seems that PML takes a while to rear its ugly head. But so far so good!

One wouldn't be surprised to see Biogen go through a re-branding exercise if this good news keeps up. Of course what would really be welcomed is a re-pricing exercise, to bring this therapy's cost more into line with the existing CRAB drugs and encourage more third party payers to permit its first line use. Sadly, the majority of the cost structure for tysabri patients comes from the infusion center charges, which Biogen has little control over.
