More Gd and a wait make for better MRI imaging

When getting an MRI for MS, you will usually get an injection of gadolinium (Gd) which will enhance the image and indicate active lesions. While you might imagine that lots of testing went into determining how much of this stuff should be stuck in your veins and how long it would take to get sloshed around inside you, you might be wrong.

Apparently, little has been done to determine the optimal dose and timing. This study (full text, free reg required) found that a double dose with a 5 or 10 minute wait after administration causes more lesions to show up than the way it is usually done (small dose, no wait).

Did anybody know that Gad carries a black-box warning, just like tysabri?

It is contraindicated in people with kidney function issues.
