MS risk increased in nurse anaesthetists?

In a previous study, based on analysis of survey results, a team of Swedish researchers found that nurse anaesthetists were at an increased risk of MS compared with other nurses. This team recently followed up on these results with a different type of analysis that compared government records to see if nurse anaesthetists (as reported on the national census) had a higher number of MS-related hospital and disability claims than other professions. The analysis showed that nurse anaesthetists had a significantly higher incidence of MS compared with teachers, but a non-significantly higher incidence compared with other nurses. The authors speculate that exposure to anaesthesia (which contains organic solvents) may be responsible for this observed increase in risk.

Art- Was anaesthesia part of your toxin study which was recently concluded? What findings did you have on this?
Our study was actually a review of the published literature and we did find a couple of other papers that reported data on nurse anaesthetists. Flodin 2003 (which you can download and read for free) found an increased risk in Swedish nurse anaesthetists whereas a Danish study, Stenager 2003, did not. As for whether undergoing anaesthesia for a medical procedure increases the risk of MS, we did not find much data on this topic. However, the questionnaire we are using for our MS repository does ask about previous operations and whether general or local anaesthesia was used. So perhaps something will emerge from that.
Hollie, when do you expect to have some data from your questionnaire on the anaesthesia ?
Data will be gathered on an ongoing basis. Our first subject was recently enrolled and we expect to have around 1,000 cases and controls combined by this time next year.
I don't agree that this study is pointless. There are quite alot of interesting papers on pub med regarding solvents, anaesthesia and multiple sclerosis. It is very relevant. Complications to the nervous system is quite well known to anaesthesiologists.Take a look for yourself.
Fairly pointless study - what next the risk in Polish prostitutes, Dutch postmen, Bostonian dot.com entrepreneurs?
