Erectile Dysfunction Drugs Get New Labelling
Who can figure the FDA? Due to recent reports of vision problems, including blindness, in Viagra and its cousins, the FDA is requiring a label change (e.g. see the alert on Viagra).
This is of note to people with MS for a number of reasons. Viagra (et al) is used frequently in MS to deal with neurological problems affecting erectile function so you should know what's happening at the FDA if you are taking it.
But comparing and contrasting to the Tysabri situation, we see that the FDA is admitting they don't know that the blindness is caused by the drugs (the population involved is prone to this problem anyway) and while blindness isn't fatal, it's pretty serious and they are keeping it on the market (compare blindness to the benefit). They didn't understand what was happening in Tysabri, but the reaction wasn't "let's keep it on the market and see what happens." I really don't see a whole lot of consistency in their reasoning when you consider this and situations like Novantrone, which is killing people (and they know why), and it's also still on the market.
