Alpha Lipoic Acid may inhibit T-Cell migration into Spinal Cord

Two reports from the recent American Academy of Neurology show researchers looking into the effects of a common nutritional supplement, Alpha-Lipoic Acid. ALA suppresses EAE by inhibiting T cell migration into the spinal cord and does so partly by inhibiting matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity. Effective dosage appeared to be at 1200 mg/day; at 600 mg/day, there was no increase in the serum blood level of ALA. Abstracts on the two studies are here and here.

Have you been following anti-oxidant research in general in MS? I'm finding a lot of positive reports in many small trials with very few negative findings. Many of the anti-oxidants under study support mitochondrial energy levels. There is on-going work with these agents in the various ataxias of which Freidreich's is best understood. It is my hope that by studying commonalities between the ataxias and MS that I personally can come up with mechanism info pertinent to my case. The rash side effects suggest mild allergic reactions. Is this also your take?
