On June 16, riders take off from Chicago on a trek to the Northeast.
MS Pedal to the Metal is a 1,000-mile bicycle ride from Chicago to the Boston area to benefit the Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis
The event has raised $9,000 to date.
Lauren Smith, of Chicago, conceived and spearheaded the event, which ends at the Waltham, Mass., office of Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis.
Riders will pass through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and Massachusetts on their way.
Joined by Eric Karls, of Chicago, the team will make the trip in nearly two weeks ? stopping at cities along the way to spread the word.
MS Pedal to the Metal is expected to raise more than $20,000 for research to find the causes of multiple sclerosis.
Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to curing multiple sclerosis by determining its causes.
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disorder of the central nervous system that often results in severe disabilities including the inability to walk, blindness, cognitive dysfunction and extreme fatigue.
The disorder affects more than 400,000 people in the United States and 2 million worldwide.
