Pre-Event Lecture: Amelia Davis of MSFriends

Amelia Davis is an award winning photographer, author, and patient advocate who speaks to the newly diagnosed about living and working with a chronic illness. Ms. Davis was diagnosed with MS in 1998. She is the President of MSFriends, the only 24/7, telephone peer support organization for people living with MS. Ms. Davis' book, "My Story: A Photographic Essay on Life with Multiple Sclerosis," is a very personal look in words and pictures at multiple sclerosis.

Special Guest: Trent Watkins, PhD at Stanford University School of Medicine

Trent Watkins became interested in biological research at a young age when his mother was diagnosed with MS. For the last seven years, Dr. Watkins has been a researcher in the laboratory of Dr. Ben Barres at the Stanford University School of Medicine. This lab is working to develop new tools to investigate the mechanisms of myelin formation in the central nervous system.

The lab is also currently using samples from Accelerated Cure Project's MS Repository to assess the presence of antibodies that target the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB). This research is focused on the role of the BBB in the progression of MS and whether the BBB is the target of an immune response, which may lead to MS.

Dr. Watkins' undergraduate training included studying the biochemistry of DNA damage repair enzymes at the University of North Texas Health Science Center and investigating the contributions of immune cells to the pathology of Alzheimer's disease at the University of California at Berkeley.

Do You Know Someone We Should Invite?

This event's purpose is to spread the word about the Accelerated Cure Project. If you know someone who is directly or indirectly affected by Multiple Sclerosis or you think would like to contribute to the cause, please get us any contact information you have for them so we can invite them. A name and phone, email, and/or address is all we need. You can click here to get in touch with us or include this information when you RSVP.

Even though we are not charging for this event, we need to make name tags, order food and drinks, and prepare other materials based on the expected turnout. Because of this we ask that you let us know you plan on attending as much in advance as you can. You are free to bring additional guests at the last minute, but if you can let us know in advance and have them RSVP, we would appreciate it.
